Your neighbors called. They like your music.
I know that... That is why I didn't attempt it.
If you've ever seen a 421 mounted in an 825/828 cabinet, it should be immediately obvious that those dust caps are far too large to be 421's.
Take a look at the 1208B in the '75 pro catalog, or the 1236 in the '78 pro catalog to get a sense of the correct scale of the 421 dust cap in that opening.

Well, I DO have a set of PA version of the A7 with 421 woofers in them and 511B horns. So I do know what they look like. It's not that big of a deal to me either way. Just wondered why everyone was making such a big deal out of it and coming to the conclusion that it wasn't an Altec woofer. That's all.
For those familiar with the products, the conclusion is easily reached.Just wondered why everyone was making such a big deal out of it and coming to the conclusion that it wasn't an Altec woofer.
The "big deal" is that it's an ad selling something where the photo directly contradicts the description.
For some folks this is also a factor. Although in the marketplace, i'd value a good working pair of E-140's considerably higher than any version 421. That is not to suggest that one woofer is better than the other, it's simply relative to their performance in a resale market.Because a JBL speaker in an ALTEC cabinet is sacriligious!!!!
There is also the remote possibility that those are indeed 421's, albeit with grossly incorrect parts used to re-cone them. I think it's unlikely, but to be fair i do recognize that remote possibility having seen some pretty odd cone kits slapped in Altec woofers in the past.

I am very familiar with Altec speakers and love them. I own 3 pairs and won't sell them because they are excellent. To me they are the best. That's why I'm a member here. Either way, I'm not going to have a stroke if someone does put another brand woofer in Altec cabinets. I've seen that happen MANY times in the past. The bad thing is that they always use just whatever fits. JBL isn't so sac-religious in an Altec cabinet to me. It could be worse believe me! It's not the end of the world. Each to his own. I don't like when someone says something is original and it's obviously not. But I'm not going to lose sleep over it and act like they've commited a murder... Just my 2 cents worth.
And have yet to offer any evidence to support your claim.I said they were 421 woofers in my first post...
You have missed the entire point of the exercise. They do NOT have 421 cones, and are likely NOT 421's at all. Until the seller offers pics of the actual woofers from behind, they could be nearly anything. Improperly re-coned 421's are only one possibility, and i don't give that possibility a lot of creedence.
If you want to take the seller's word at face value, that's entirely your prerogative. I know better.
Larger caps would have covered the VC leads on a stock 421. I've replaced 421 metal domes with Altec vented paper caps which are a bit less than 4 inches in diameter, they completely cover the voice coil leads. The dust caps shown are at least 4 inch, and the VC leads are still visible.Maybe the chrome caps got pushed in by somebody so they glued larger ones over top of them?
Also, the 421 cone has a smooth, consistent surface profile. The cones in the pic obviously do not.
The possibilities: They could be 421's that were re-coned with a Waldom or other cheap ass kit that doesn't belong there. Check ebay, there are incorrectly re-coned Altec woofers on there often.
The other distinct possibility which i find more likely as the VC leads shown outside the 4 inch dust cap strongly suggest a 4 inch voice coil resides under there, is that they are JBL E130/E140 or K140's.

I was kidding gentleman, I would run any speaker anywhere if it sounded better.... I have only heard one pair of JBL's and they sound very different than Altecs, but sounded nice. I have been looking for a pair of 1500al's for awhile and a pair of 4435's in mint condition and 250ti limited edition, one of these days they will show up...
